Philip Roth is the name of a Jewish-American novelist born in 1933 in Newark, New Jersey. He is best known for his sexually explicit comedic novel Portnoy's Complaint (1969).

On April 19, 1990, he married long time companion, English actress Claire Bloom. In 1994 they separated and in 1996 Bloom published a memoir detailing their marriage and break-up called Leaving a Doll's House. It is rumoured Roth was infuriated by his unflattering depiction there, and that by way of revenge he created the poisonous Eve Frame character in I Married a Communist as a stand-in for Bloom.

Currently Philip Roth lives alone in the Connecticut countryside.
